Week 3: Butternut Squash + Pear Soup

This week's dish was quite an adventure. I was supposed to make something over the weekend but got caught up with school work and almost fell off the wagon just two weeks into January. I actually broke another resolution (no Starbucks) today. I have a reasonable explanation though! A classmate thought I'd be an appropriate fit for the role of Jay-Z in our group presentation... so I barely had any breakfast as I spent the morning conducting 'research' for my character. It was also freezing outside, so Starbucks just happened to be the easiest option in between classes ;). Breaking two resolutions in one day would have been really embarrassing, so I threw on two pairs of pants and headed to the grocery store, determined to cozy up with a bowl of homemade soup for dinner.

I've never made soup before. Or cooked with butternut squash. Surprisingly, neither of these novelties posed much of a challenge. There was a major kitchen nightmare though... and it involved the one appliance I thought I'd conquered. The blender. Apparently the maximum fill line etched in the glass jug isn't just a suggestion. As soon as I pressed the "on" button, the lid popped right off and hot soup erupted from the blender. I think I finally understand why my mom always kicks me out of the kitchen when I offer to help her prepare dinner.

Aside from the mess, this lovely soup (recipe from simplydelicious) was an absolute hit with my roommates! If only the soup were as photogenic as it is delicious.
