Week 25: Smoothies!

If you've never had your wisdom teeth removed, trust me when I say the surgery is the easiest part. Especially if you opt for the kind where they knock out. The brutal part is actually the recovery stage, when you're forced to stick cotton gauzes in your mouth (for over twelve hours, in my case), and wake up to the taste of blood in your mouth - which I suspect is how Luis Suarez feels every morning. But the worst part is being restricted to mushy foods while having to turn down a very tempting dim sum invitation and look at food photos on Instagram. I was only able to endure one bowl of congee before rushing to Costco to stock up on smoothie ingredients. So, for the next few days, I will be featuring some of my smoothie adventures.

(THE GREEN SMOOTHIE TASTES BETTER THAN IT LOOKS, I PROMISE!)

Day Three Updates: I got the avocado pear smoothie recipe from Pinterest - I will include the exact recipe below, but I strongly suggest leaving out the honey as the smoothie came out unbearably sweet. I don’t know if anyone else has this issue, but my nose sweats whenever I eat things that are too sour, spicy… and as I just discovered, sweet. The strawberry-pomegranate smoothie (or shake?) came out very tasty though! On a side note, the combination of eating mushy foods out of a glass jar with a spoon (I’m not allowed to use a straw!), and constantly whining to my friends about being hungry or having sore gums has had me feeling like a massive baby. I will try to be braver tomorrow - here’s to a speedier recovery (for everyone’s sake)!

Avocado Pear Smoothie
Ingredients
1 pear, cored and cut into small chunks
half an avocado (ripe)
1/2 cup greek yogurt
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp honey (LEAVE THIS OUT!)
4-5 ice cubes
Strawberry-Pomegranate Shake (this is delicious! Tastes like summer.)
Ingredients
2 cups strawberries, frozen
Arils from half a pomegranate… or you can use 1 cup of POM juice
juice from half a lemon
1 tbsp ground flax seeds
Directions
Blend the pomegranate arils with 1/4 cup water and strain the mixture. Next, add the strawberries and flax seeds to the strained pomegranate juice and blend until smooth. You may add a few ice cubes to thicken the shake to taste.
